INTERVIEW WITH ME (IN SPANISH) ON POPULISM AND PRAGMATISM IN VENEZUELA. The zigzags, concessions and populist measures of governments committed to socialism are often reactions to the aggressive tactics from enemies from within and without. The deviations in Stalin’s USSR, for instance, have to be understood in the context of the threat of an imminent invasion by the Nazis. "Path dependency" theory demonstrates that these types of distortions become crystallized and live on long after the threat disappears. The following is part one of an interview with me that explores this dynamic in the case of Chávez’s Venezuela:
